Trauma

“Too much, too fast, too soon” experiences can create what we call “trauma.”  Loss, abuse, domestic violence, accidents, addictions, bullying, military service, natural disasters, witnessing or being a victim of a crime can cause trauma.  These are experiences that we sometimes refer to as Trauma with a capital “T." Trauma with a lowercase “t” refers to more nuanced, hurtful experiences we can have, like micro aggressions, wounds from relationships, school, work, the news, etc.  Trauma is cumulative: The more we have, the more challenging it is to heal. It can be steeped in secrecy and can make you feel deeply alone in your pain.  Traumatic experiences can live in our bodies, with or without recollection of the memory.  Symptoms you may experience from unresolved trauma include hypervigilance, feeling disconnected from your body, numbness, low self-worth, shame, fear of getting hurt again, tension, difficulty with relationships, feeling unsafe, difficulty managing feelings, sleep disruptions, intrusive thoughts, and sometimes flashbacks or intense dreams about past trauma.
